Fortnite is a massively popular game that kids of all ages play obsessively on computers, phones, tablets and PlayStations. It is a multiplayer sandbox game whose most popular modes fall into the battle royale genre. It was released in September of 2017 for free on multiple platforms and quickly gained popularity, making it one of the fastest-growing games ever. It has influenced pop culture with new dances and even celebrities, and has a large revenue stream from in-game purchases and subscriptions. It is a very social game that encourages teamwork and communication. It also allows for players to customize their characters and create their own islands.

In the most popular Fortnite mode, up to 100 players are dropped into a map and must survive by killing other players or avoiding them until only one player is left standing. Players can choose to play solo or with a team of up to four. Players can gather weapons and other gear in the game, which is scattered throughout the island, including vehicles and a glider that lets them fly around the map. Players can also build structures to protect themselves or use them as vantage points to attack other players.

The game’s graphics are cartoon-like, with damage represented by numbers and a depleted health bar rather than blood. Players can be eliminated in a variety of ways, including being killed by another player or by the encroaching storm. Downed players can crawl around while losing health or can be respawned at various locations, called “Reboot Vans”. The game is free to play, but in-game currency, called V-Bucks, can be purchased with real money. Players can also purchase a season or battle pass, which gives them access to different in-game extras and rewards.

During gameplay, players may encounter other players who are not following the community rules. If this happens, the player can report the other player by selecting the menu icon (three lines sometimes called a hamburger menu) in the upper-left corner of the screen and choosing “Report Player”. They can also submit audio evidence by pressing the record button.
