Fortnite is a multiplayer online game available on PCs, PlayStations and Xboxes. It is free to play and has gained huge popularity, with children of all ages playing it or watching others play on YouTube and Twitch. Its almost hypnotic appeal has some parents concerned, and it can have a detrimental impact on children’s social lives.

Fortnite has been a big success for developer Epic Games and is now a multi-game ecosystem, letting players select from thousands of user-created experiences. Parents can use the built-in Parental Controls to restrict their child’s access to games rated higher than their age, or block them entirely.

The game’s storyline is simple: 100 players skydive onto an island and scavenge for gear to battle other players and the storm. They can choose to fight alone or in a squad of up to three teammates. They can also build fortifications of limited durability to protect them from gunfire and slow other players’ progress. Weaker pieces can be destroyed in a few hits, while stronger ones are more durable but take longer to construct.

When a player is downed, their health depletes and they are eliminated. However, downed players can sometimes be revived by teammate or re-spawn at various locations on the map. Either way, the aim is to be the last player or team alive.

There are several ways to win in fortnite, but the most popular is by eliminating other players. Players can build fortifications of limited durability to shield themselves from gunfire or to make it easier to navigate the map, and they can also build structures that provide them with vantage points over other players.

The visual style of fortnite is cartoon-like, and there is no visible gore when players attack each other. Damage is indicated by numbers and depleting health bars, and defeated players disappear in a blue light. Players can hear other players’ voices and text chat, and there is a risk of them using swear words or other inappropriate language. Players can report other players by clicking on the sidebar menu and selecting “report player.”
