Fortnite is an online multiplayer game developed by Epic Games and released in 2017. It’s available on multiple platforms, including Xbox One, PlayStation, computers and smartphones. The game is free to play, although players can make in-game purchases using the virtual currency V-Bucks. The in-game store allows players to purchase weapons, outfits and other items. Alternatively, players can use the currency to buy season and battle pass rewards.

The main game mode, referred to as Fortnite Battle Royale, pits 99 other online gamers against each other in player-versus-player combat. This last-person-standing game provides a compelling mix of Minecraft-like gathering and building and third-person shooting with plenty of fun crossover content, colourful animations and a slick design. With its eponymous storm, fast-paced action and the spooky idea of being the last player standing, the game is very popular among teenagers.

Aside from the Battle Royale game mode, fortnite also includes a Creative mode that gives players complete freedom over the world they play in, and supports Unreal Editor for creating custom games within Fortnite. Its sandbox gameplay, cross-platform availability and engaging gameplay makes fortnite the perfect choice for kids who want to spend their screen time creating, playing and exploring a digital world.

As with many multiplayer games, fortnite contains some scenes of mild violence. The game has been rated 12+ by PEGI and Common Sense Media and is best suited for children over 12. However, it can be difficult to limit playtime and some kids may find it hard to stop playing, especially if they are achieving high scores. The game’s chat functionality is unmoderated and can expose children to inappropriate language or bullying. It can also lead to excessive screen time, which is why parents should monitor their children’s playtime and take steps to set boundaries.

If you’re having trouble opening the fortnite launcher, try reinstalling the game. To do so, follow the steps in How do I reinstall fortnite?. If you’re still having trouble, try adding the fortnite folder to your computer’s exclusion list. If you’re having trouble with the launcher not showing up in your Windows start menu, see How do I add the fortnite folder to the Windows start menu?

Fortnite was previously available on the App Store, but was removed in August 2020 after developer Epic Games bypassed Apple’s 30% commission on in-app purchases. The move sparked a legal battle between Apple and Epic Games that hasn’t been resolved yet. However, Fortnite has since made its way back to the App Store and the alternative AltStore. As with any new game, it’s important to preview fortnite before allowing your child to play. This will give you an idea of what they will be able to access and how much time they will spend playing it. If you are concerned about your child’s online activity, BrightCanary can help. Our online monitoring service helps you to block or filter inappropriate content and monitors your child’s screen time.
