Cupcake: (informal) a small cake baked in a container shaped like a cup and usually with icing on top.

(slang) A weak or effeminate man.

The cupcake, with its tiny size and delicate frosting and decorations, has become a symbol of femininity and an emblem for the rise of the feminist movement. Women have adopted the cupcake as their mascot, using it to challenge the traditional role of domesticity and the patriarchy reinforced by the food industry. Many women have launched businesses based on cupcakes, and some of these have even grown into multimillion-dollar enterprises.

In addition to their symbolic importance, cupcakes are a delicious treat. They are a perfect way to test out new recipes and flavors, and the tiny size makes them easy to bake with children. Unlike regular cakes, they do not require multiple layers or elaborate carvings, and can be quickly and easily eaten on the go.

While the modern-day cupcake, clad in paper wrappers and decked with a mountain of sugary frosting, is a triumph of culinary science, the tiny treats actually have a long history of baking. During the 19th century, when ovens were less reliable and large cakes would often over-bake or under-bake, bakers found that by baking smaller cakes in ramekins and teacups, they could achieve the desired results with more consistency.

The first step in making a cupcake is to mix the ingredients together, either by hand or with a mixer. It is important that the batter has a good viscosity, meaning it has enough body to hold its shape in the pan or mould when it is poured. Extremely fluid batters tend to have flatter tops, and very thick batters can produce cracked peaks and under-baked cakes.

After the batter is mixed, it must be poured into the cupcake liners or greased pan. Using a medium ice cream or cookie scoop will allow the batter to be deposited evenly into the cups. If the batter is particularly thick, try putting it into a heavy resealable plastic bag and cutting a hole in one corner. Then squeezing the bag over each cupcake will deposit the batter evenly in each liner.

Once the cupcakes are baked, they can be removed from the pan and allowed to cool completely before frosting. Generally, it is best to frost the cakes when they are still warm, but if the cupcakes are too hot, the icing will melt and slide off the cake, leaving a messy, unattractive finish.

Once the icing has been applied, the cupcake can be decorated with flowers, sprinkles or other sweet decorations. Some bakers also choose to put a small flag on each cupcake as a sign of country of origin. While some people may argue that a cupcake is not as impressive as a full-sized cake, the fact is that cupcakes can be just as aesthetically pleasing and delicious when well made. In fact, some people find that they enjoy a collection of cupcakes as much or more than a whole cake.
