The newest video game craze in middle school to high school aged children and even professional baseball players is fortnite. This multiplayer online game is available on Xboxes, PlayStations and computers and mobile devices. Kids have been obsessively playing the game and watching others play on platforms like Youtube and Twitch. Its popularity has parents concerned.

Fortnite is a free-to-play game developed by Epic Games. It features multiple modes, but it’s best known for its “Battle Royale” mode in which up to 100 players compete against each other to be the last person standing in an ever-decreasing virtual arena. Players use weapons to kill opponents and collect items to help them survive. Players can also build structures as defenses or to gain the high ground over other players. The game is rated 12+ by PEGI because of scenes of mild violence and some language. The game’s style is cartoonish, and there is no visible gore when players attack each other. Damage is represented by depleting health bars and players disappear in a blue light when they’re defeated. There is also a separate single-player or co-operative mode, called “Save the World,” which involves fighting off zombie-like creatures.

What makes fortnite different from other battle royale games is its building mechanics. Players can construct walls, floors and stairs to protect themselves and reach high places. This creates a skill gap between skilled players and those who play less often. In addition to being a fun and social game, fortnite is competitive, with ranked matches in which players can earn experience points, level up their guns and unlock new outfits for their characters.

The game is constantly changing and expanding. New weapons, maps and other gameplay features are added regularly. Fortnite also has a “Creative” mode in which players can create their own content and play mini-games. Players can also compete in a series of tournaments, with some having cash prizes.

While it is free to download and play, fortnite has a large and profitable in-game economy that generates revenue for Epic Games. Players can buy in-game items such as weapon skins, dances and emotes to customize their characters. They can also purchase a battle pass that gives them access to special events and rewards.

There are also in-game advertisements, some of which can be seen by children. Parents should be aware that fortnite has an unmoderated chat functionality in which players can communicate with other players, including those outside the match. Kids can be exposed to inappropriate language, bullying and extremism through these communications.

Parents can set parental controls for fortnite to filter swear words in text chat, disable friend requests and turn off voice or text chat, as well as restrict in-game purchases and enable Playtime Reporting, which emails weekly play reports to parents. Parents can also report other players to CEOP if they see behavior that concerns them.
